چکیده

COMMUNICATIONSTO THE EDITOR 353 1) wiping the insertion tube with a 20 percent povidone iodine scrub solution. 2) suctioning iodine scrub solution through the biopsy channel and cleaning the channel with the cleaning brush. 3) suctioning sterile water through the channel. 4) suctioning freshly activated gluteraldehyde through the channel and soaking the entire insertion tube for 10 minutes. 5) rinsing the insertion tube with 200 ml of sterile water. 6) air drying the biopsy channel. Repeat cultures of the biopsy channel yielded heavy growth of both Serratia and Pseudomonas. The insertion tube was then resoaked in gluteraldehyde for an additional 20 minutes, and cultures were still positive. Only after an additional 45 minutes in gluteraldehyde were the cultures negative, Because many of the patients in our Burn Center have either colonized or are infected with antibiotic-resistant organisms, and our recent experience has demonstrated that recommended methods of disinfection may not be effective, we are now sterilizing the fiberoptic bronchoscope in ethylene oxide gas after every use.

Hexanucleotide Repeat Expansion in C9ORF72 Is Not Detected in the Treatment-Resistant Schizophrenia Patients of Chinese Han

Hexanucleotide (GGGGCC) repeat expansion in C9ORF72 (HRE) causes frontotemporal lobar degeneration, frontotemporal dementia-amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. HRE was also seen in the genomes of patients suffering from several other degenerative diseases. However, whether it is present in the treatment-resistant schizophrenia patients remains unknown. Genotyping 3...

TDP-43 proteinopathy in frontotemporal lobar degeneration and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis: protein misfolding diseases without amyloidosis.

H erein, we review advances in understanding a group of disorders collectively known as TAR-DNA binding protein 43 (TDP-43) proteinopathies since the report that TDP-43 is the major disease protein that mechanistically links frontotemporal lobar degeneration with ubiquitin-positive inclusions (FTLD-U) with and without motor neuron disease to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Because TDP-43 protein...

The role of mutant TAR DNA-binding protein 43 in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and frontotemporal lobar degeneration.

TDP-43 (TAR DNA-binding protein 43) has been identified as a key protein of ubiquitinated inclusions in brains of patients with ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) or FTLD (frontotemporal lobar degeneration), defining a new pathological disease spectrum. Recently, coding mutations have been identified in the TDP-43 gene (TARDBP), which further confirmed the pathogenic nature of the protein. Tod...
